Waltz opus 49 p.60 Johannes Strauss (1825-1899) By Estelle Bertrand Universally known, Johannes Strauss (no relation to the "romantic" Richard Strauss) is the composer of the famous Radetzky March, a work played during the traditional New Year's concert. He is also and above all the father of the Viennese waltz. The waltz that we propose you to study is taken from his opus 49 called "Das Leben, ein Tanz" (Life, a dance). The tempo to adopt must be moderately fast, without forgetting to systematically place a slight accentuation on the first beat. In A major and in bipartite form, this pretty unpretentious piece will require good control of the right hand, in particular the thumb which will have to stop the unwanted resonances of the bass strings. Measures 13 to 16, try to make the half-rests that "break" the legato of the melodic line clearly heard. The proposed version was produced by the famous and prolific Napoléon Coste.
