Sonata, K. 78 by Domenico Scarlatti (1686-1757) By Valérie Duchâteau – In A major, in binary form, this sonata (originally written for harpsichord) by the prolific Domenico Scarlatti follows a traditional development in two parts. The first, in the main tone, ends with a cadence in the dominant tone (E major) while the second makes a return to the main tone (A major) audible. On the guitar, this sonata concentrates several difficulties, the first being undoubtedly the speed of execution. Everything is there: scales, arpeggios, neck movements, etc. We will focus on some extensions of the left hand, notably in measure 9 where it is appropriate to hold the G sharp in the bass, while maintaining the barré and ensuring melodic continuity. Similarly, from measure 11 to measure 14, it will be necessary to hold the barré vigorously. Both parts concentrate the same difficulties. One last tip: pay attention to the fingering suggestions.
