Romanza Miguel Llobet (1878-1938) By Estelle Bertrand Miguel Llobet is known for being one of the direct heirs of Francisco Tárrega with whom he took classes at the Barcelona Conservatory. The Spaniard gave his first concerts at the age of 20 and almost immediately began a national and then international career, supported by the same patron as his illustrious teacher. He also taught the young Andrés Segovia the principles of the technique dear to Tárrega. Romanza is a demanding piece, like many works from the pen of Miguel Llobet. It is in bipartite form with a shift from C minor to C major. The harmonic richness is typical of the period, although surely less flattering than that specific to the world of Albéniz, of whom Llobet was a contemporary. A solid mastery of barred notes will be required as well as a skillful left hand, capable of extensions and appoggiaturas with the fourth finger.
