Pavane, op. 50. Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) By Estelle Bertrand Although it is better known in its orchestral version, Gabriel Fauré's Pavane, op. 50, in F# minor, was originally composed for piano in 1887. When listening to it, it gives off a peaceful and soothing atmosphere. According to the composer, the tempo should not be less than 100 to the eighth note (or 50 to the quarter note). The compositional principle adopted is that of the accompanied melody. So try to bring out the theme by slightly hitting it, and lighten the accompaniment by plucking it. For reasons specific to the instrument, we offer you an arrangement in the guitar key of E minor. In this, it does not present any particular difficulty except to be careful not to hinder the resonance of the open strings. Furthermore, the barred notes remain exceptional. As an anecdote, it is said that this piece inspired Maurice Ravel's Pavane pour une infante morte, when he was a student of Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire.
