Intermediate-Allegro molto K. 550 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) By Estelle Bertrand. Mozart composed his Symphony No. 40 in G minor during the summer of 1748, in less than a month. It stands out from some of the production of the Salzburg child prodigy by its solemnity and tragic character. Although immensely popular today (thanks to its first movement in particular), this symphony was probably not performed during the Austrian composer's lifetime. As an anecdote, the manuscript of the work belonged for a time to Johannes Brahms. The Allegro molto presented here is the arrangement of an excerpt from the first movement of this symphony. Mozart's genius is fully palpable in this theme of insolent simplicity, but with overwhelming dramatic scope. Be careful not to weigh down the accompaniment with half notes or whole notes. From measure 25 onwards, Mozart moves into the relative key of G minor: B flat major. And perhaps the most delicate passage in this arrangement: the bar on the 8th fret that extends from measures 33 to 40.
