Variations on a Norwegian Dance by Edvard Grieg By Valérie Duchâteau. This dance is the second of the four "Norwegian Dances Opus 35" composed in 1881 by the Norwegian Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), whose work is characterized by his artistic choice to unite his music with the roots of his country. This theme is one of the "Best of" of Django Reinhardt's repertoire and it is for this reason that I was led to discover it. Gypsy jazz guitarists are in the habit of "chorusing" on the harmonic grid and on this theme by the Norwegian composer. In this context, I created variations. The theme is a transcription of the original version for two pianos as Django Reinhardt also exposes it. The first variation is a reprise of the theme in the octave with a play on the resonances of the open strings in the open chords. The tremolo variation is composed on the thirds of the harmonies. It is essential that this tremolo is in relief and that the thumb playing is in the background. The last variation, which precedes the return of the theme, is written as an improvisation (always on the initial harmonic base). It can also be placed as an introduction to the theme. The chorus parts of Django Reinhardt were published in the special issue "Django" of Guitarist Acoustic magazine. You can arrange these variations as you wish and in the order you feel.
