Coppélia. Léo Delibes (1836-1891) By Estelle Bertrand This "Slow Waltz", with its incarnate candor, is taken from Léo Delibes' ballet, Coppélia, written after The Tales of Hoffman. The plot is simple: Franz and Swanilda love each other, but their love is going to be disrupted by the charming Coppélia, who turns out to be an automaton. This waltz is the most famous passage in the ballet. In the romantic waltz, it is customary to emphasize the second beat as per the tradition initiated by Johann Strauss. Beware of cramps because the little finger of the left hand is frequently used in this arrangement.
