Bourrée and Double p.70 BWV 1002 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) By Valérie Duchâteau. Like the Baroque Suite, the Partita is a suite of dances in a pre-established order. The opus BWV 1002 in B minor, from which this bourrée and this double (variation) come, is made up of four dances alternating slow and lively movements. Johann Sebastian Bach, who in addition to being a renowned organist was an excellent violinist, composed these partitas for violin at a time in his life when he devoted himself enormously to instrumental music. For their performer, these pieces combine several major difficulties because, although they are written for a monodic instrument, they are inhabited by a hidden polyphony. They should therefore not be approached as an exercise in style or dexterity, as the continuous sequence of eighth notes in the double might falsely suggest! Lightness of musical discourse, combined with good voice direction, will be the key to a successful interpretation.
